“What a friend we have in Jesus”

  Thought for the day – Saturday 28th March 2020

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in Prayer!

In these difficult and uncertain times it’s not just our circumstances, but how we think of them that affects our daily living.  Focusing on this season of Coronavirus and how long we may have to endure it, and the effect it is having on our daily lives, can redirect our thoughts away from God and His word.

The prophet Isaiah tells us: ‘You will keep in perfect peace all whose trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.’  (Isaiah 26:3, NLT)

Now that we have to self-isolate we have much more time to let our thoughts spin out of control and forget that God never changes, whatever our circumstances.

O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry everything to God in Prayer.

God is still in control, just as He was when He sent His son into the world to be our Saviour.  When we start to worry our faith takes a tumble and we start to believe that we have to carry this burden on our own shoulders.  Our trust in Jesus  becomes less than  positive and we flounder.

Have we trials and temptations, is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.

When we’re weighed down with care and anxiety, not just for ourselves but our precious families, let us make God the object of our trust as each day unfolds.  In doing so, peace will reign in us and even inspire others to turn to God in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge – take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do your friends despise, forsake you?  Take it to thee Lord in prayer;
In his arms he’ll take and shield you, you will find a solace there.
