The joy of painting

What TV programmes in the height of Lockdown did you find helpful?

One of the most popular was a 1970’s programme “The Joy of Painting” presented
by Bob Ross, a well-loved and inspirational presenter.

Bob is an artist and his particular passion is landscapes. It was truly amazing to
watch him take a blank canvas and turn it into a stunningly beautiful and tranquil
scene in 30 minutes. In the midst of much turmoil Bob with his quiet and an
assuming style was able to draw in and captivate a wide audience. Both the content
and delivery brought a degree of soothing calm to many a home.

Bob’s artistic talent cannot be denied but perhaps his greater gift was the wonderful
way he invited people in to his world with such gentle reassurance and
encouragement. On reflecting on upon Bob Ross’ ability, it is mainly his attitude that
is so inspiring.

I notice that the set Epistle for Sunday 27 th September is the totally awe-inspiring
passage written by Paul to the Philippians, (Philippians 2 1-13). This passage is all
about the importance of our attitude, Christ’s attitude and Paul’s call to us all to
‘Imitate Christ’s humility’.

Whenever we are on the receiving end of another’s humility it is a real blessing.
Today, let us thank God for all those who give us gentle encouragement and by their
attitude make the hardest of days more easy to bear.
