Saint George

Saint George was reputed to have been Palestinian. The story most associated with him is that a dragon that lived in a lake required a daily human sacrifice to feed on. When it was the turn of the Princess to be sacrificed, the King offered a large reward for anyone who killed the dragon. George came by on his white charger and killed the dragon with his lance. Then he preached a magnificent sermon that converted the locals and distributed the king’s reward to the poor.

Legend has it that this happened in Uffington, Oxfordshire.  On the top of Dragon Hill no grass grows – it is said that this is because that is where the dragon’s blood ran. George was beheaded in Palestine in AD303 when he refused to deny his faith. Some say it is doubtful that he ever came to England at all although his flag (a red cross on a white background) is more commonly seen here than the Union flag.

I remember seeing some ancient maps when I was at school. Over the unchartered and unexplored areas of land was written ‘Here be dragons’. In our darkest hours as children, there were monsters under the bed and we talk of ‘gremlins in the works’ when things go wrong. What are your dragons/monsters/gremlins?  Relationships that have gone wrong? Financial and money worries?  Employment concerns? Bullying, abuse or harassment?  Addictions? Illness? Mental health? Do you feel like you’re being gobbled up bit by bit? There’s no magic wand to make the baddies disappear but a good place to start the fight back is to petition the King.

Call on God wherever you are, just use your own words and tell Him your troubles. He sent His son Jesus to be sacrificed in Your place so that You could have life and have it more abundantly. Your monsters may not be vanquished at once but He promises to be with You through the battles of life and fill You with His Spirit to help You come through
