Peace

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

A friend of mine often uses this verse to pray with people who are going through tough times. It was the words Jesus spoke as he was sharing his last meal with the disciples. It was when Jesus knew that the time was rapidly approaching when he would go through the toughest of times, yet he does not worry about his own future. Jesus reassures his friends that even in the darkest moments they can find a real deep sense of peace in him. This peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but a confident assurance and comfort that whatever happens Jesus is with us.

There is a beautiful hymn about peace written by Fred Kaan

Put peace into each other’s hands
and like a treasure hold it,
protect it like a candle-flame,
with tenderness enfold it.

Put peace into each other’s hands
with loving expectation;
be gentle in your words and ways,
in touch with God’s creation….

Put Christ into each other’s hands,
he is love’s deepest measure;
in love make peace, give peace a chance
and share it like a treasure.

May you know that peace that only Jesus can give, and let us share it with those around us this Christmas time and beyond.
