Continuing reflection on the Prayer Card from the Christian organisation called Medical Missionary News (https://mmn.uk.com). Wednesday’s prayer is for CARE FOR DISABLED AND ORPHANS.
“Disability is often seen as a curse in certain areas of the world. Pray for those who are supporting the disabled and their families so that they may give value to them, help them cope with the disability and connect them with others in a similar position. Similarly, pray for those working with orphaned children that they might see the love of God demonstrated so practically.”
I do not recall ever watching the programme entitled “Does he take sugar?” that brought awareness of the danger of addressing the carer, rather than the disabled person. However, it frequently reminds me of the need to treat any disabled person with respect. For many years, it seems as though disabled children and adults were shut away from public view. Though, to some extent, it made sense to have adequate care in one specialised place, there was criticism that such people were being “hidden from public view.” People using cars displaying a Blue Badge have been criticised because “they look fit and able” to an observer, and one response has been, “Not all disabilities are visible”. Today, we see many more disabled people in the community, and perhaps this prayer is a reminder for us to ensure, as Christians, that we may give all people support and value.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, please help us in our attitude and behaviour to all, including those who may be suffering from a disability, seen or unseen. AMEN
