Immediately after Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of the living God, then Jesus gives Peter a new identity. When Peter first became a disciple, his name was Simon. Simon, son of Jonah. Now Jesus says to him, I am going to call you Peter which means the rock. And I am going to build my church on you.
