Room to breathe

Just over a year ago I wrote about the end of an era as our cherry tree had to be felled because it was diseased. I was upset then but did not anticipate the unintended consequence of there being more sunlight and space for the buddleia beside and beneath it. With the shade gone what has always been a poor specimen is taller and looks as though it will flower better than it has ever done. Good for the butterflies.

People we rely on or who are always there and doing things can be like the cherry tree. We would not want to be without them but when the time comes and they are no longer able to be so active and involved, others take their place and find themselves developing in ways that may be surprising.

I wonder how many of us are underdeveloped and not flowering as we should because we are in the shade all the time. In my working life I have always been delighted to have opportunities to encourage others in their careers but I wonder how good I am at keeping quiet and allowing others some space in church life? Am I one who suffocates others?

Next week I will share another thought about support but for now, next time you are out in the countryside or a park, have a look at the way plants and trees jostle for position and the best light and adapt to fit in.

A Prayer

Lord Jesus, during your life on earth you called people to follow you and empowered them to serve you after you were no longer in our flesh. We ask you to enable us to be the best we can be in our environment, blossoming in the light of your love and service which never stifles but is always exactly right. Amen.
