No sitting around

Now the nativity scene is set up on the mantlepiece, I can’t help but see it when I settle down on the sofa in the evenings. It struck me last night that the characters are either standing or kneeling. Apart from baby Jesus of course, who is always depicted lying on his back – seemingly vulnerable to the animals and elements around Him.

What position do we take in front of God? Do we bend the knee in worship as we’re told all will do when Jesus comes again?  Are we standing alert and ready for action? I imagine the shepherds were standing as they drew breath after rushing onto the scene curious and bemused at the truth of the angel’s message to them. I imagine the dignified Magi were considering the fulfilment of prophecy, exhausted by their journey and aware of the threatened power of King Herod. I imagine Joseph was lovingly and proudly standing to protect Mary and the baby – probably wary of these rough strangers turning up unannounced at such a personal family time. How do we approach Jesus? With curiosity?  With knowledge?  With love?

No-one is sitting, relaxing, taking it easy, dozing off, sleeping ……

When Christ comes, we are called on to respond.
