Hidden talents

A fortnight ago we were blessed with the famous “Bill the boxer” for a week. Although I could have left him at home, I preferred not to leave him for long periods. So, he came with me to one church meeting – apologies to the good folk of Bramford for the sound effects, and then on to our Anglican church for a choir rehearsal. Being unsure how he would behave, I allowed him to accompany me to the organ loft. The rest of the choir remained downstairs, and were entertained to a vision of Bill’s head popping over the balcony.

At one point he did look longingly at the organ keys but I managed (just) to avert his attempts at playing the organ with his great big paws. I don’t think his playing would have been up to scratch – although someone did refer to him as “Bach – the apprentice organist”!

Johann Sebastien Bach came from a long line of musicians, and in turn 4 of his 20 children were composers. He was a prolific composer, producing music for organ, cello, violin, as well as many large choral works. His name is known to non-musicians and musicians alike.

I have never composed any music, and cannot play anything without the sheet music. As a famous comedian once said – all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. However, I think it is fair to say that my efforts are better than the sounds “Bill the boxer” would have made.

We are each given gifts and talents which can be put to good use in our Christian witness. My name will never be remembered for composing or musical skills, but I can provide some musical accompaniment to our Sunday morning singing.

What are your gifts and skills? You are possibly not the next JS Bach, but you may have some musical skills, or perhaps you see your ability to play the church organ on the same level as Bill. You will, however have some gifts and talents that can be put to good use in your Christian witness. Or perhaps you recognise skills and gifts in others who don’t see them in themselves.

However humble your efforts, all are worthy of God. Even Bach had to receive some education in music.

Prayer: Lord, may my efforts be worthy of you. May my gifts and talents be used to your glory, and when I don’t recognise my own talents, but see them in others, may your grace be enough for those gifts and talents whatever they be, that they can be put to good use to bring others to your Kingdom. Amen
