A recent incident reminded me of a humorous story from many years ago.
Two ladies were enjoying coffee in their local café and passed the time looking around at the other patrons and guessing what occupation they might have. One man, who they agreed was possibly an accountant, stopped as he walked past their table and, leaning over, said, “I thought you might be interested to know that I teach deaf children to lip read!” I understand all three had quite a laugh.
TV programs representing the police remind us that many motorists have Dashcams that not only record what is happening in front, but behind as well. Following accidents, the police will often appeal for Dashcam footage in an attempt to ascertain the cause. Other programs collect similar footage that is submitted to local police, often resulting in prosecutions.
These two scenarios are a reminder, not only that people in our vicinity may be aware of us and even have evidence, but also that we have a God who is the ultimate witness not only to what we say and do, but also what we think.
Psalm 139 starts with these words that I now realise should be etched in my brain at the start of every day to remind me to ask for God’s help in every aspect of my life, even when there are no human witnesses.
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue, you, Lord, know it completely.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may these words be a daily reminder, not to scare us, but to assure us of your knowledge of us and our need to seek and know your help. AMEN
