Decimal currency change in the United Kingdom occurred on Decimal Day, Monday, 15 February 1971. The traditional system of pounds, shillings, and pence (£sd) was replaced with a base-10 decimal system where the pound was divided into 100 new pence. I wish that similar action had been taken with the “introduction” of the metric system. A recent survey asked if we should revert to the “old” system, and though it was tempting to say, “YES”, I recognised that for most people younger than me, that would be unfair. At my age, dealing with “metric” has involved converting it to measurements I understand, though our kitchen scales still have the option of either.
When I visit our local butcher and ask for half a pound of mince, the older man complies without any problem, but the younger men look a bit puzzled. So now I ask for a “generous handful”, and of course the weight varies.
Daniel, chapter 5, verse 27, uses the expression “Weighed on the scales and found wanting.” One commentator refers to this as “a famous idiom meaning someone or something has been tested, judged, and found to be lacking, deficient, or failing to meet the required standard.”
I am so grateful that we have a God, whose measurements remain unchanged: not adapted so more of us meet a reduced Divine standard.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, unchanging God, we thank You that though we fall short of Your Holiness, You welcome us to come and be elevated, through Jesus, to that which we are not able to reach in our own strength. AMEN
