Bacon roll anyone?

One Saturday in the Autumn of 2020 there was a “Breakfast in a Bap” event held in Seaton Road Methodist Church. It was held in the garden as we were just coming out of Lockdown. Obviously, people were still very wary of being with others and so we had quite a bit of food left over. The Rev. Jo Jacobs suggested wrapping it up and taking it over the road to the football pitches where Trimley Red Devils were playing. Needless to say, the Breakfast Baps were all taken in a very short space of time. We were asked   “Would you like to do this every week?” After some discussion it was agreed that we would give it a go. Jo organised a rota for the volunteers and the necessary equipment and food were purchased.

We started off with two teams working each week. The first team cooked the bacon and sausages and made up the baps in the church and the second team carried everything over to the sportsfield. This was no light task as we had to carry tables as well as the food. On many Saturdays we got very wet and cold but so many young people, their parents and supporters were so thankful for a hot drink and hot food.

We have progressed over the last two years to having a kitchen in a container. It has electricity and water. We cook and serve bacon and sausage baps, hot drinks and snacks from the relative shelter of the container. We have many regular customers and it’s lovely to talk to the visitors as well. We wear our Felixstowe Methodist Church Volunteer badges with pride and people are aware of our presence at the matches.

When we were asked to take this outreach project on I’m sure we didn’t visualise that we would be as successful as we are. We also raise money for the church and for Trimley Red Devils. Some of us have also been recognised as being part of the Open the Book team. (fame at last.)

Jeremiah 29 v 11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Thank You Lord for your plans for us.
