My daughter-in-law is learning to drive which gave me opportunity to revisit the basics of driving theory. There are probably many of us who were “fortunate” enough not to have to sit a driving theory exam. I can remember in my driving test being asked to read a number plate and identify a couple of road signs.
I also have to confess I have had to sit the speed awareness course in the past. Yet another opportunity to go back to basics – and to learn some new tips.
What are the speed limits in town, countryside? What do road signs mean? What hazards can you anticipate on a hypothetical journey?
In the letter from Peter (2 Peter 1:12-15) he urges those to whom he is writing to go back to basics.
Even though we may have been Christian’s for many years, or only a short time, it is good to remind ourselves of the fundamentals of what we believe.
God is the creator of all things, he created each one of us in his image. We have wandered away from him, yet God in his mercy sent his Son Jesus Christ to earth in human form to live amongst us. Jesus experienced all of the emotions that we go through, he knew what it meant to be human. Yet he was also divine. Jesus came as the servant King and he willingly took the path to the cross, and took on all our wrongdoings so that we could be set free. He did it for you and for me.
Prayer: Gracious and merciful God, may we never forget the basics of our faith. May we not be too impatient to hear the simple message that you send us. May we never be too proud to go back to basics and refresh ourselves in the knowledge of all that you have done for us, theough your Son Jesus Christ. Amen
