Are you ready?

I was watching a TV programme recently that involved a young man who was involved in an accident. He had only been driving for a short period, and it appears that, travelling at about 65 mph, he had a tyre “blow out!” The car hit the central barrier, careered across the adjoining lane, clipped another car and ended up on the grass. A motorway patrol vehicle was quickly on the scene and advised him to contact his insurance company to arrange recovery. As he was using his mobile phone, the two motorway employees discussed the costs of repairing the damaged barrier, the road surface and the two vehicles.

Returning to the young man, one pf the police officers told the young man that his insurance had been cancelled because he hadn’t downloaded an app. The young driver replied, “I didn’t know I had to do that!”  To add to his distress, he might subsequently learn that the police would charge him with driving without insurance, and he would be personally responsible for all the repair costs.

Reflecting on the young man’s devastation, I wondered how many people today assume their eternal future is assured.  We probably wouldn’t say we are living in a Christian country now. But maybe a child of Christian parents, a regular church attender or some other mistaken assumption means that too many people today do not realise they are not “covered” for eternity.

I often feel encouraged when I hear a Christian being asked, “Why did you do that?” The response may give an opportunity to explain why.

John 3 verse 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. This used to be one of the best-known verses in the Bible. I wonder if it still is.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we do not know if the people we meet have a relationship with you, but I pray that if they do not, you will use us in some way to “make the teaching about God our Saviour attractive (Titus 2 verse 10). AMEN.
