A royal cup of tea

One of my favourite things to do first thing in the morning is to lay in bed with a cup of tea and read a good book. It just so happened that on Friday 9th September, (the day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II), the mug that my butler / husband got out of the cupboard was a mug that was given to every household in our village on the occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June of this year.

Over the last few days there has been various angles on the Queen’s life and her legacy in the media.

Many people have commented how, when they have net her, that the Queen would put people at their ease. She was knowledgeable on a whole range of topics, and was happy talking to people from many and various different walks of life, in this country and far beyond.

This then got me to thinking about Jesus and how he made a point of not meeting with the rich and famous, not meeting exclusively with religious leaders, not meeting solely with people of his own culture. Jesus spoke with lepers, widows, Samaritans, tax collectors, prostitutes, the poor, women, children and many other people. He was most relaxed when sharing a meal with them.

When I have my cup of tea in the morning, I thank God that Jesus, the King of kings, chose to share a “meal” with me.

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, you came to live among sinners, you came to share hospitality with the marginalised. Thank you that you chose to share your love with me. Help me to share hospitality with others, those who I might not ordinarily chose, those who will not repay me, or those who take me outside my comfort zone. AMEN
