While visiting my daughter and her children last week, my youngest grandson tripped and fell onto their hard stone kitchen floor. Later we found out that he had put his top teeth through his bottom lip. At the time, all we and he could see was lots of blood. Through his tears and sobs, he cried out ‘I want to look in the mirror!’ There’s always a lot of blood in such injuries and my daughter was reticent to allow him to see without first ascertaining the extent of his injury. Once he was cleaned up, he was fine apart from a swollen bottom lip.
I thought he was amazingly brave to have asked for a mirror in the midst of the accident. I would probably have done the opposite and try to avoid confronting reality. Even as adults, we tried to protect him from the situation.
What about in our spiritual lives? Are we ready to ‘look in the mirror’ and see ourselves and our sin as it really is and how it will affect our future? Or will we confront it head on knowing we know the one who can wipe it all away ironically with His own blood? Unlike the incident above, leaving no swelling or scars or hurt with us. All we need to do is cry out to Him.
