I recall watching a concert shown on TV, to celebrate the 40th birthday of Andrew Lloyd Webber (now Baron Lloyd-Webber) which must have been about 37 years ago. As part of the concert, a lady slowly walked down to the stage singing the song With One Look from the musical Sunset Boulevard. I was amazed to discover the lady was the actress Glenn Close and have frequently listened to her recording of that song.
The title of that song made me query how often “just a look” has been the source of tension between married couples and friends. A reaction, such as, “It is not what you said, it was the look on your face!” Some readers may remember Marti Webb’s (among others) version of “Take that look off your face” by the same composer, a sentiment which is not easy if your reactions are anything like mine!
The disciple Peter was told by Jesus that before the cock crowed, he would deny Jesus three times. Peter’s response, as recorded in Matthew 26 was “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same. We easily overlook the response of the other disciples.
But in Luke’s record of the event, when sadly but not surprisingly, Jesus’ words were fulfilled, he records (chapter 22) “Just as he was speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the cock crows today, you will disown me three times”And he went outside and wept bitterly.”
I have always considered that Jesus’ look was one of love, not disappointment or anger and that may be another reason why Peter wept bitterly.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your love so clearly demonstrated at Calvary and the forgiveness that You offer. AMEN
