Will your anchor hold?

Where I live, I look straight out to the North Sea and often watch the large ships coming into the port. There are also many smaller craft enjoying the sailing and being blown along by the wind. I would assume that the size of the anchors is very different in the different vessels but they are a necessity.

Sometimes in life you may feel that your worries and cares are weighing you down. Like they are an anchor? In this case the anchor is not necessary. It is a hindrance and God wants you to know that you can toss it overboard and see it sinking into the depths of the sea.

The best anchor is our faith in God’s love and care. The words of hymn 645 in STF express this so well:

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,

when the clouds unfold their wings of strife?

When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,

Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

steadfast and sure while the billows roll;

fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!

Dear Lord, we are thankful as we start this new year that you are a strong and safe anchor in our lives.
