“It’s a shame we only sing Christmas carols at Christmas” was a comment that reminded me of an occasion when, in my early twenties, I was preaching at a village church. It was the middle of the summer, and I thought the congregation might have to explain to anyone walking past, why we were singing “Once in Royal David’s city”. One of the lovely hymns that uses its verses to tell a remarkable story.
Not quite so unusual is singing certain hymns other than at Easter and one that I listen to throughout the year is the Don Francisco version of Peter’s song, also known as “He’s alive”. I have, on more than one occasion, suggested to a Christian radio presenter that this version is more appropriate than that sung by Dolly Parton as the clue is in the name!
An older and wiser man once told me that hymnology is not theology. Yet, if the words of hymns remind us of Bible truths, there is every reason to sing them whatever time of the year it may be.
Another lovely Easter song listened to throughout the year, is also called “He’s alive” and sung by Heidi Pegler with the All-Souls Orchestra. As this beautiful song reaches its crescendo Heidi powerfully sings these words, “I know that it’s true because Jesus is living in me!”
I am sure that we all know the date of Christmas Day every year but Easter for many of us is more difficult to identify, especially without a diary that shows information for the following year. It has been said that the Christian doesn’t need Christmas or Easter, to name but two major events in the church calendar, as it is possible to celebrate the truths associated with them every day. Though seldom sung today, another challenging song offers a personal testimony with the words, “You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart”.
So, is it important to know the exact date of Easter in any year, or are we happy to rejoice in the truth of the resurrection every day?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the Bible accounts of the birth, life, death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. May each day present us with opportunities to marvel and worship as we are reminded of these amazing truths. AMEN
