On my return from Church a few weeks ago I found this bunch of wildflowers left sticking out of the spout of a full watering can by the back door. This simple gesture lifted my spirits which had taken a bit of a battering. (Nothing to do with being at Church!)
None of the flowers were cultivated flowers. They had been found at the edge of the fields growing without any outside “interference.”
In Matthew 6:27-29 (The Message) Jesus says as part of the Sermon on the Mount, “Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen colour and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.”
How often do we worry about how good we are, or how whether what we offer is the best?
God does not worry about whether we are wearing our “Sunday best” or the smartest haircut.
God created those wildflowers, he sent the sun and the rain to nourish them, the winds and the birds to spread their seeds once they have finished flowering. Beauty was created without our effort.
If you are able, why not take a walk around the countryside and admire the beauty that surrounds us, and give thanks to our Creator God, who loves and cares for each one of us. You might also want to share a small part of that beauty with someone. You may never know how much that simple gesture might lift their spirits too!
