Walking in the woods

One New Year’s Eve, several years ago, I was up in Sheffield with my husband visiting his family. We decided to walk to the neighbouring village in order to join in the festivities. The walk back involved my husband and his friend trying to outdo each other with ghost stories. We had to walk back through some woods, and with an overactive imagination, I attempted to find my way through unfamiliar territory.

What helped me, was not my two companions, rather it was the torch that we had the foresight to bring with us. I was able to navigate the tree roots and avoid falling into any rabbit holes, (and to scare away any lurking ghosts!)

In life we sometimes have to make our way through dark times. If we carry the torch of God’s light, it will help us avoid the pitfalls of tangled roots that try and trip us up, or the rabbit holes that trap us and cause us to stumble.

If we study God’s word it will shine a light to clear the way for us and help us to stay on the right path.

PRAYER: (Psalm 119: 105-112 paraphrase)

By your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path. May we commit ourselves and not turn off the right path. Help us to keep straight even when the shadows frighten us, by your Word. Don’t let others try and divert us off the correct path. Help us to concentrate on doing exactly what You say. We have inherited Your Word, the guide for living. AMEN
