Tomorrow

Tomorrow is Mothering Sunday as I’m sure you all must know. There are so many cards in the shops and adverts for presents and flowers we could hardly forget. So many of us are looking forward to being a bit spoiled but on the other hand there are so many who are not looking forward to it at all.

I’ve recently had coffee with a friend who lost her mother a few months ago and she is grieving and is dreading Sunday. There are others who did not have a happy relationship with their mother and so Mothering Sunday is meaningless. There are mothers who have lost a child and have no one to celebrate with.

In the Bible Ruth loved her Mother-in-law and followed her when she was returning to the land of her birth. Naomi was not a blood relation of Ruth’s but Ruth loved her and went with her.

I have two sons and the card from one has been sitting for a week with a notice on it to not open it until Sunday. My other son lives in Singapore and Mothering Sunday is celebrated there in May. Might I have two celebrations?

Heavenly Father, as we celebrate Mothering Sunday may we always remember those for whom it is not a good day. Give them strength to carry on with their lives in the knowledge that they are surrounded by your love. Help us to give thanks for the love of our families and our church family.
