Thought of the day – Wednesday 22nd July 2020
James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no douibting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
James says that we can ask the Lord for wisdom when we lack it. I wonder how often we ask for wisdom, or do we mostly think we can manage the ‘small things’ by ourselves? Perhaps we don’t immediately think of going to the source of all wisdom.
I remember one occasion when I was desperate to know how I could put a situation right that had gone awry between one of my sons and myself. We were staying with him for the weekend and I just couldn’t leave without sorting it out, so I seemed to be constantly waking up all night and praying for wisdom; we were leaving in the morning so time would be short. When morning came, I still had no idea how to solve the problem.
I went downstairs to make a cup of tea for my husband and me. As I got back upstairs, my grandson aged 3, met me and asked, “have you made tea for my daddy?” In that moment, I recognised my opportunity, so I said, “can you ask daddy if he wants it?” and daddy’s reply was “yes”.
I learned that day that the answer to our prayers for wisdom may not come as a flash of revelation, but could come through the innocent question of a 3-year-old child.
