The need for nourishment

Psalm 37 v 3. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture

My elder son, James, was born eight and a half weeks prematurely. He weighed 3 pounds and 6 ounces. He spent the first 3 weeks of his life in the Special Care Baby Unit as he needed help with his breathing for the first few days and he had to be fed via a tube as he couldn’t suck. He needed a lot of nourishment and by the end of three weeks he was 4 1/2 pounds and we were able to bring him home.

This was a scary time as I was used to working in the hospital and having help at hand, both in person and equipment. For a while he needed to be fed little and often but he fed well and grew and on the date he was actually due he was 7 pounds and 3 ounces.

As followers of Christ, we are constantly finding our emotional and spiritual reserves drained by the challenges of life. In such times, we need nourishment to strengthen us. In psalm 37, David encouraged us to strengthen our hearts by feeding our souls.

When weakness afflicts us, the reassurance of God’s never-ending faithfulness can enable us to carry on in His name.

His faithful care is the nourishment we need, giving us, as the hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” which says “strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.”

PS. James still enjoys his food
