The Meeting of the Waters

From a Poem by Thomas Moors

When we visited family in Southern Ireland a few years ago, we visited the
village of Avoca which is where Ballykissangel was filmed. You can still see the
pub, church and many other places which were in the television programme
and, in fact, it is now a tourist attraction. Just outside the village is a place
called The Meeting of the Waters and even though it is a tourist spot it is still a
calm lovely place to visit and sit in peace.

Thomas Moore, the Irish poet, wrote a poem, an extract we have on place
mats, which I read at breakfast most mornings:

Sweet Vale of Avoca
How calm could I rest
In thy bosom of shade
With the friends I love best,
Where the storms that we feel
In this cold world should cease,
And our hearts like thy waters
Be mingled in peace.

I felt that this was so appropriate when we were there and also in these
unprecedented times when there are times when we all wonder when things
are going to go back to some form of normality.

I hope some of you may also find the poem helpful.

May God bless you all.
