The Book of Ruth : a journey of faith dvd High Fliers Films, 2019 86 minutes
This film is a fairly faithful representation of the Old Testament story of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz with such additional characters and dialogue as judged necessary to make the story flow.
A narrator helps the story along but only occasionally.
The story has some significance for Christians since Ruth was a Moabitess, that is a gentile, a non-Jew.
Following her marriage to Boaz who had became a ‘goel’, a kinsman-redeemer, Ruth bore a son named Obed who was grandfather to King David.
The succession leading to the birth of Jesus (Matthew ch 1) was thus in place.
Jesus became the ‘goel’, the kinsman-redeemer of all believers since he bought us with a price
(1 Corinthians 6 v 20 and 7 v23) through his sacrificial death.
One interpretation of this story clearly suggests that gentiles are also included in God’s plan of salvation.
Some doubt whether the events of this story actually happened. Was it invented or concocted to make a point ?
Whatever the truth, it is a heart-warming story of loyalty, faith and love.
