A recent daily Bible reading was from Colossians chapter 3, including verse 22. 2Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favour, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.”
The phrase “when their eye is on you” took me back to the time when working in a bank, we were subject to inspections. A “short” lasting only a few days or “a long” that might take several weeks. They were unannounced and created a sense of fear even if you thought you were doing everything correctly.
It was the practice, in those days, to allow a 15-minute coffee or tea break and when the inspectors first arrived staff would ensure this time was not exceeded. However, by the second week of a long inspection, most staff had reverted to the “norm” with breaks of up to 30 minutes.
I recall a time when I was treasurer of a charity and a committee member questioned what I was doing. Somewhat unwisely, I responded,” With my financial experience I suspect I could do things you would not be able to recognise, but I am aware that there is always my Divine auditor in heaven who is watching everything I do.”
There are examples of this in both Bible testaments, including Achan, King David, Ananias and Sapphira to name a few. I find it easy to forget that God is not only aware of what we do but everything in which we are involved including our thoughts.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, may we always be aware of your knowledge of us and enable us to live our lives without fear and for your pleasure. AMEN
