The 1950’s (part 2)

I remember when I was a child that Monday used to be “wash day.” Laundry was sorted into piles and the wash tub was filled with water. Lifebuoy soap was very popular. The scrubbing board was used to great effect and when everything was washed it then all had to be rinsed and then put through the wringer. I’m not surprised that my mother was strong with all the hard work she had to do. I remember very well when she bought her first washing machine. It seemed like a miraculous machine as it could boil things first. The one thing it did was to make life a bit easier for her.

I wonder how folks now would feel if they had to wash and scrub clothes by hand and then wring them out. That would be a major problem for me as my arthritic hands would definitely not enjoy that experience.

As the washing machine helped my mum, how can we help and support others. I’m not suggesting that we offer to hand wash their clothes but can we be there for some who need a bit of encouragement or practical help?

Thank You Father for being such a support to us.
