Biblical guidelines for correct use of Spiritual gifts
1) Gifts of the Spirit are to glorify Christ (1 Pet 4:10,11; John 16:14)
2) Gifts of the Spirit involve all (1 Cor 12:7-11)
3) Gifts of the Spirit should unite all (1 Cor 12:12- 26; Rom 12:4,5)
4) Gifts of the Spirit build up the fellowship (Eph 4:11-13)
5) Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the context of love (1 Cor 12:31 – 14:1)
Charismata – gifts of grace – love gifts 1 Cor 12:4
Diakoniai – service – not for personal benefit 1 Cor 12:5
Energemata – working – energy God at work through us 1 Cor 12:6

1) What point is being made by Paul on the threefold use of the words “same”,
“all”, and “one” in verses 4,5,6,8,9,11?
2) What is the overall purpose of gifts, imparted by the indwelling Spirit of God, in
the life of the church? v7 gives the clue. How far is this recognised as the
purpose of gifts among believers in your church or fellowship?
3) Look at verses 12-13. “Many” and “one”. How should a church apply the idea of
the “body” of Christ to itself?
4) In verses 14-20, what is the great lesson that believers across the ages need to
take to heart?
5) Look up other lists of “gifts” in the New Testament; Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians
4:11-13; 1 Peter 4:10,11. Speaking gifts, prophetic gifts, serving gifts,
administrative gifts,
6) What is the best way of discovering what your gifts are as a Christian? How can
other Christians help you do this?
7) Why do certain abilities or gifts sometimes cause problems for a church, as they
seem to have done at Corinth?
Spend time in prayer, giving thanks for the gifts and dedicating them back to the Giver.
