Breakfast was finished and it was time for Peter and Jesus to talk about the elephant in the room. Jesus tackles it head-on. Three times he asks Peter, do you love me? The three times mirror the three times Peter denied Jesus. By asking these questions, Jesus is both confronting Peter and reaffirming his call upon Peter. Peter doesn’t wriggle out of it and come up with excuses; he answers positively, “Yes, I love you.”
