On Sunday morning’s service we sang the hymn, “Rock of ages” (434 in Singing the Faith). I have not sung this hymn for years and years but when I was much younger it was a very popular song. It brought many memories back to me especially of singing it in a Mission Tent meeting.
I suppose you would say that the words in it are quite old-fashioned now but as it was written sometime in the mid to late 1700’s that is understandable.
The last line in each verse really stands out for me.
V 1 “Cleanse me from its guilt and power,”
V2 “Thou must save, and Thou alone,”
V 3 “Wash me, Saviour, or I die,”
V4 “Let me hide myself in thee.”
To me this is a hymn of repentance and realising that only God can forgive. We come empty-handed and clinging to our faith in the cross.
Thank You Father for sending your son to die on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven.
