Pure Joy : rediscover your conscience by Christopher Ash
IVP, 2012 £10.99 205 pages ISBN 978 1 844 745 852
“We all need to engage with this timely book,” so says Jonathan Lamb, chairman of Keswick Ministries.
It is indeed a first class book dealing with conscience in all its complexity.
In just 200 pages and 9 chapters, Christopher Ash goes through, in some detail, the challenges and benefits of what is an integral part of all human nature.
Beginning with conscience as a guide (not always reliable), the author goes on to consider how conscience works as a symptom telling of right and wrong. Hardened consciences and cleansed consciences are then examined, ending, finally, with developing a Christian conscience.
This is an excellent treatment of a somwhat neglected topic.
As an indicator of the neglect, ask yourself ‘when did I last hear a sermon on conscience or a mention of conscience in a public prayer ?’
