Prophets

The second candle of the Advent Ring reminds us of those who have spoken for God.  Those who speak God’s wisdom into tricky situations;  those who speak peace into discord;  those who speak reconciliation where people and structures are broken;  those who speak comfort to those in despair; those who foretell consequences  and give warning.

Some Prophets are famous.  The Old Testament Prophets such as Isaiah are always remembered at this time as they foretell the coming of the Messiah and with this foretelling  bring hope.  Every year at Carol Services throughout the country we will be reminded that “..the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light…”  and we’ll be told of a Messiah who will known as “…Counsellor, the Mighty  God, the Everlasting  Father, the Prince of Peace…”

The church of Christ has never been silent.  The Book of Acts deals with prophecy as a natural ministry of the early Christians.  Paul talks of  the Gift of Prophecy  in 1 Corinthians 12.  We have all heard of men and women of God who, throughout the ages, have spoken up for God with courage and in truth.

At this time in Advent we remember Prophets – not just Isaiah and Old Testament examples but also those who have prophesied in the Church through history and those who continue the ministry of Prophecy today.   Today let’s thank God for those who will speak for him however grand or however humble the situation and let’s pray for a truly prophetic church family building each other up as we listen to God’s word and share His words with those around.

Prayer: Loving Creator God, Father of us all, we thank you for your prophets.  We thank you for the brothers and sisters in the faith who have the right word to say in and out of season; for those prepared to stand firm for you and what you say. We pray for a prophetic Church, ever listening and alert to knowing what to share, when and with whom.  In Jesus name.  Amen
