Matthew 8 v 27.
The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Ocean waves can be awesome in size and power. Sailors have measured waves at 60 feet, higher than most houses. In 1933 the Navy tanker Ramapo was hit by a wave 112 feet high! And on a wild, stormy night at Tillamook Rock off the coast of Oregon, a wave picked up a rock that weighed 135 pounds and smashed it into a lighthouse 100 feet above the water line.
Waves on inland lakes can have tremendous power too. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior after being smashed by 30 foot waves.
Sometimes our emotions hit us like waves of a turbulent sea. One after another, waves of hurt, humiliation, uselessness, isolation, anger and fear pound us. We’re sure we’re going under. At those times we need to call on the Lord. He’s the one with the authority and power to calm the angry waves within us. He can bring peace to our troubled hearts.
There have been spectacular photos of the huge waves crashing against our shores in stormy weather. Whilst I look at them and think how fantastic, there must be people who are looking at them and thinking about their destructive ability and hoping that their homes will be safe.
Even the little waves we get in Felixstowe can change the beach every day.
We all have to cope with different emotions when they hit us and we can feel wiped out. God is never wiped out and we can depend on Him to rescue us.
Give thanks that the One who calms the oceans can calm our fearful hearts.
