“Nigel”

Many of you would have no doubt heard that Monty Don, of Gardeners World fame, has had a bereavement. His much-loved golden retriever Nigel died in May.  Nigel was known throughout the World it seems and once even appeared as the star guest on “The One Show”.

You may have also heard that “Bob” as in the “A Cat called Bob” movie has also recently died. Bob was the beautifully intelligent ginger cat owned by James Bowen who was once a homeless London Street Musician and recovering drug addict.

Both Nigel and Bob where very instrumental in turning both Monty and James’ lives around.

Monty Don has had times of deep depression in his life and James has known the pains and hardships of living rough.

In my previous Circuit one of our members, a wonderfully, politically active blind woman told the story of how during a power cut and fire alarm her guide dog, basically, led everyone out of the building to safety.

For many during the period of lockdown, having a pet has been so therapeutic. After all we can stroke and touch our pets and the desire for touch for humans is a basic need.

World famous Theologian Emmanuel Kant once said “He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”

Let us give thanks today for the way in which pets and so many different types of animal have been a positive influence during this time of pandemic.

Prayer

Great God, Creator of all we thank you for our pets and the way in which they bring comfort and healing.
We thank you for guide dogs of all types and all animals who enrich our lives.
May we learn from their loyalty and willingness to serve.
May those who have brought pets during lock-down continue to love and care for them
Help us to be good stewards of your creation.

Amen
