“Never give up”

Thought of the day – Monday 4th May 2020

THOUGHTS FROM THE KITCHEN

The Celtic Church held a lovely concern for the everyday.  God is present everywhere  if  we only take the trouble to look for him and listen to him.  They also used the Book of Psalms daily in their devotions.

This set of thoughts is inspired by acts of creation in the kitchen, for many of us the heart of the home.  God is there and speaks to us clearly, if we only listen.  Each thought is connected with a quotation from a Psalm as a starting point.

DAY SEVEN – Never give up!

Psalm 66 vv.  16 – 19  Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me.  For I cried out to him for help. praising him as I spokeIf I had not confessed the sin in my heart, my Lord would not have listened.  But God did listen!  He paid attention to my prayer!  Praise God who did not ignore my prayer and did not withhold his unfailing love from me.

Everyone who knows me knows I enjoy cooking .   Sometimes things go wrong.  In my kitchen I’ve learned to get over the upset, work out what went wrong and then try again.

Our Loving God never gives up on us.  He never gives up on his world, on his creation.  How many times do we get things wrong?  St. Paul comments on how so often he wants to get it right, but it doesn’t work.  However he rejoices that he can turn  to God and he will be put right and made ready to try again.  God has never given up on us – though many people given up on him.

So a final thought  for this series.   God is always there to help and support us, even in the smallest most mundane  thing.  The recipe which is a disaster today make prove a joy next time if we take the proper care, read the instructions thoroughly and obediently and if we give it enough time.  Our life with our God will have its ups and downs, but he will always be there to pick us up and help us do better the next time round.  Never be too proud to ask for help – it’s what the Holy Spirit does when we let him.  Never be too proud to admit something is wrong and to ask for forgiveness – it’s what Jesus has promised.  Never doubt our Father’s love – it is always there for us.

Prayer
Loving God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  When we get it wrong, forgive us.  When we try to do things our way, not yours, put us back on the right path.  When we stop listening to you and your Word, teach us obedience to your will and your word.  Creator, Everlasting God may we never give up on you, just as you never give up on us.
Amen.
