“Music”

Thought of the day – Monday 18th May 2020

Things I like to do….

This is the first from a series of “Thoughts for the day” using four of my hobbies, all of which I have been fortunate enough to continue despite the Covid-19 lockdown. They all give me the opportunity to reflect and ponder on my faith.

Psalm 81:1-2 (Contemporary English Version)

God Makes Us Strong

Be happy and shout to God who makes us strong!
Shout praises to the God of Jacob.
Sing as you play tambourines and the lovely sounding stringed instruments.

Music is an important part of my life, whether it is playing hymns on the organ or worship songs on the piano, panto songs on the keyboard or orchestral music on the cello, (hence why I chose to use this version – although when I play not so lovely sounding!)

Who can fail to be moved by a rousing Wesley hymn, or worship song sung by a congregation of thousands? What fun to join in the laughter and singing of the village pantomime? Listening to a full symphony orchestra playing one of the classics can touch our emotions.

Music and worship go hand in hand. It involves the whole person. We listen to the music, we take part in the singing, and we move as the Spirit moves us. Music lifts our thoughts and emotions to God. David was formerly a shepherd boy who would sing and play his harp whilst tending his father’s sheep on the hillside. When he became king he ensured that music was an integral part of worship.

Through music we can reflect on our shortcomings and needs, (in my case to practise more!) as well as celebrate God’s greatness.

So today find your favourite piece of music, reflect on what that music means and says to you, and praise the God who makes us strong, when we feel weak.

Prayer
Lord God, you are worthy of the melody of praise. May our hearts sing to your tune, and may we be strengthened by your Holy Spirit touching the strings in our bow. AMEN
