ROLE DESCRIPTION

This role description outlines the responsibilities of members of the District Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee.  The Committee arose in response to the Strategy for Justice, Dignity and Solidarity agreed at the Conference of 2021.  Members of the EDI Committee are appointed by the District to serve on the Committee for a term of three years.

Key purposes of the role:

  • To operate within an atmosphere of prayer and attention to God within the work of the EDI Committee
  • To work as a member of the EDI Committee, and support its Chair, in fulfilling the purposes and responsibilities laid out in its Terms of Reference
  • To provide leadership and encouragement in implementing the Strategy for Justice, Dignity and Solidarity throughout the District
  • To support any Circuit EDI Officers that have been appointed by Circuits within their area of responsibility
  • To be a point of reference for the reporting of EDI issues
  • To contribute to the successful implementation of the EDI Committee’s responsibilities
  • To discern the EDI needs of their area of responsibility within the District, including where training and development is required
  • To work alongside ecumenical, inter-faith and community groups, as required, to advance EDI within their area of responsibility within the District

Key tasks of the role:

  • To attend meetings of the EDI Committee
  • To read the agenda and associated papers for meetings of the EDI Committee
  • To share good practice of EDI work within their area of responsibility within the District with the District EDI Committee
  • To share EDI issues that arise within their area of responsibility within the District with the District EDI Committee, and contribute to setting the EDI priorities and action plan of the District
  • To identify EDI training needs within their area of responsibility within the District and share them with the Chair of the EDI Committee
  • To identify access needs within their area of responsibility within the District, which are barriers to members of the circuit undertaking training that is being provided by the Methodist Church, and to work alongside the Regional Learning Network to meet these needs and overcome these barriers, such that everyone in the District who needs to is able to access EDI training

Experience and skills required:

  • Awareness of EDI principles and the Methodist Church’s Strategy for Justice, Dignity and Solidarity and an interest in implementing the Strategy
  • Understand the importance and limits of confidentiality
  • Able to respond to issues quickly
  • Have sensitivity and good interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to self-learning and professional development
