Acts 17:11 They searched the Scriptures daily to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.
Enjoying a meal recently, as one of a party of five, two of us were bemoaning the constant repetition of some of the modern Christian songs and I apologised to a younger member of the party because she may not have realised, she was eating with two “grumpy old men”. It was a few days later, that I recalled a “one verse hymn” (otherwise known as a chorus) that we sang in my younger days.
Read your Bible pray every day, pray every day, pray every day.
Read your Bible pray every day if you want to grow.
If you want to grow, if you want to grow
Read your Bible pray every day if you want to grow.
Just one of the many repetitive songs of yesteryear. How soon we forget!
This prompted a memory from my late teens when I was sitting in a room for an English exam and as I turned over the examination paper I noticed a list of essay topics, of which only one appealed – Books.
I took the opportunity to write about the Bible, 66 books in one, and consisting of so many exciting stories about love; thrillers including spying; war and peace – to name but a few. I was able to develop those topics by mentioning many examples that I had learned thanks to a Christian home upbringing and regular church attendance. I suspect I mentioned Ruth and Boaz, the 12 spies and too many wars to mention here. I am not sure what the examiner’s response was as he read my submissions, but I was successful!
Mark Twain allegedly said, “It is not the parts of the Bible I don’t understand that worry me, it is the parts of the Bible I do understand.”
PRAYER Heavenly Father, we ask for a commitment to regular Bible reading so there will be a fund of information that the Holy Spirit will bring to our attention as and when needed. AMEN.
