Do you ever find you have a hymn or song running through your mind for no apparent reason? In the last week I cannot get out of my mind:
Through all the changing scenes of life,
In trouble and in joy,
The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ.
It’s not a favourite of mine or one we sing very often. However, it made me think of hymns which follow us through life.
From Sunday School I always loved:
God has given us a book full of stories,
Which was made for His people of old,
It begins with the tale of a garden
And ends with the city of gold.
I think of wedding hymns – “Love divine, loves excelling” or “All praise to my redeeming Lord”. I had an adult baptism and the hymn I chose was “O love that wilt not let me go” and I had the same hymn at my recognition service as a Local Preacher.
There are many other hymns which mean a lot to me for various reasons – “This, this is the God I adore” and “Give me the faith which can remove”.
As we progress through life our faith often changes, our tastes change and so do our hymns and songs.
I wonder what hymns you would choose and why?
Some food for thought.
