Hebrews 11

In one Bible, this chapter is headed “Faith in Action”, while others may refer to it as “Heroes of Faith.” What encourages me about so many of those listed is the absence of any mention of their failings. Readers familiar with the Old Testament records may be aware of the “shortcomings” of those listed.

I was reminded of this when my daily Bible app centred on the life of Jacob. Sometimes known as “a schemer,” his story is a record of a fascinating life and his encounters with God. The daily readings included the story of his son Joseph, who was sold by his jealous brothers as a slave and became the second most powerful man in Egypt. Reconciled many years later with those brothers, he made a brief reference to their action, but states in Genesis 45 that “God sent me ahead of you”.

The writer of the notes states, “One truth the Bible consistently affirms is that God can redeem and use evil to accomplish His own purposes”. As we see and hear what is happening in the world, and currently in our own country, may we be encouraged by the words of the hymn “God is working His purpose out, as year succeeds to year.”

PRAYER: Heavenly Father. Never let us forget that whenever we feel afraid, we should trust in You AND Your promises. AMEN.
