Luke 10 v 38-42. As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
I’m going to blame Covid !! I might as well as it is being blamed for lots of things. I don’t know about you, but I appear to not have the same energy as a year ago. Mind you it could be just that I’m a year older and the bones are a bit more creaky and the pain of arthritis is worse. I used to think of myself as a person who was not afraid of a bit of hard work and was constantly having to do something. My boys would often say that I didn’t know how to say “no.” Now I feel guilty at times when all I want to do is read or knit instead of cleaning. There’s only so many times you can tidy out cupboards anyway.
In the midst of this pandemic, it’s good to remember what Jesus said to Martha. In v40 of the above passage He told her that she had become “distracted with much serving.” He reminded her that her sister Mary had chosen the one thing that would never be taken away (v42). It’s easy to get so wrapped up in working that you can forget the most important thing—fellowship with the Lord.
So instead of worrying about having less energy I should get my priorities in the correct order. Enjoy the quieter times and spend them forming a closer relationship with God.
