EASTER JOY

I was a little surprised that my daily Bible reading app started in April with references to the resurrection that I thought would have been saved until after Easter. One, in particular, I enjoyed and wanted to share with readers because it linked together three scriptures that may seem obvious now.

John 20 records the events when Mary Magdalene went to the tomb, and was crying because “They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they have put him”. Turning round, she saw Jesus standing there but did not recognise him. Expressing a similar statement to the man she thought was the gardener, he simply said, “Mary”.

The writer of the notes said, “It is fitting that the sound of Jesus calling her name was what enabled Mary to recognise her risen Lord. Jesus had said that the Good Shepherd’s sheep follow him because they know His voice (John 10 verse 4). When He calls them by name, they respond in faith and follow Him (John 10 verse 3)”

I have known some Christians who have said to me, “Jesus told me to…” However, we also have the Bible to guide us, not only with Jesus’ words, but also with the writings of those who have been inspired to teach the early Christians and us. May we recognise the voice of Jesus as we read and listen to those He has inspired.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank you that You know us by name. Please help us to follow You as we recognise You leading us by whatever means You use. AMEN
