Psalm 91:2
‘This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety: He is my God and I trust Him.’
People often talk about their ‘Happy Place’. Their place of choice, where they enjoy being. Maybe their friends and family are there. Maybe they are doing their favourite thing. It’s what we are told to imagine when things are going wrong. Put yourself in your ‘Happy Place’ the experts say.
This psalm is about our safe place. In God, we are always totally secure. We are not promised immunity from threat but protection through it.
Psalm 91:3-4
‘For He will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.’ Protection from wilful malicious snares and from random disease – God’s got us covered. Completely and entirely – from the thinnest hair on our head to the toenail on our little toe.
Psalm 91:4-5
‘His faithful promises are your armour and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.’ His protection is like an invisible unbreakable bubble and it keeps us safe from any physical, mental, psychological danger.
Psalm 91:11
‘For He will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.’ Our protection is supernatural and unseen. We are that precious to Him!
Psalm 91:13
‘You will trample upon lions and cobras; You will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!’ These animals represent different dangers – strong and subtle – in whatever guise they come.
Throughout this psalm there are eight promises of protection listed: rescue, shelter, answered prayer, companionship in need, deliverance, vindication, personal fulfilment and the enjoyment of personal salvation.
All we have to do is love Him, trust Him and call to Him (v 14-15)
Protector God,
We love and trust You. Some threats lie in wait for us. Some sneak up subtly. Some are our own dreads, real or imaginary. Some reflect hostility. Some we meet on life’s pathway. We never know what we may encounter and when it will happen. But simple trust in You brings us into a place of safety, the personal warmth of divine care, a pledge of defence and a host of heavenly guardians every step of the way. Thank you so much. Amen
