I am very excited today as in the mail I received a First Day Cover of this year’s Royal Mail Christmas Stamps. For the first time in a number of years the stamps all feature either the Madonna & Child or a Nativity scene. All the stamps take their inspiration from various stained-glass windows up and down the country. I love the idea of sending Christmas cards with a stamp that bears witness to the real meaning of Christmas. These stained-glass windows are such beautiful works of art.
Normally when sticking stamps on envelopes our minds will be on other things, but this year the Christmas stamps really are something special, true works of art that bear a representation of the incarnation.
Many passages of Scripture come to mind as we take time to look carefully at these stamps, the birth narratives, the beginning of St. Johns Gospel, the words of the prophets, but also these words from Colossians 1 verse 15.
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation”.
Just one sentence that contains so much theology, so much to think about and meditate upon.
A Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, that you are the image of the invisible God.
Thank you, that you are Alpha and Omega and all that lies between.
Thank you, that by the power of your indwelling Holy Spirit you live in us.
You are indeed our All in All.
First born son of all creation, we praise your Holy name.
We ever offer our praise for your great work of reconciliation.
For the precious gift of your incarnation and for the laying down of your life upon the Cross, May all that is, cry Glory, Alleluia and Amen.
Amen.
