Believe and take heart

Last week, cricket fans witnessed a thrilling Test match at The Oval. The series was packed with drama, emotion, and unexpected turns. And in that final match, two different kinds of heroes emerged: Mohammad Siraj, who took the final wicket for India, and Chris Woakes, who walked out with his dislocated shoulder to bat for England.

With his arm tightly bound in a sling beneath his sweater, Woakes stepped onto the pitch not to give up, but to stand up. Holding the bat with one hand, he showed the heart of a fighter.

On the other side, Siraj was battling his own inner struggles. A dropped catch at the boundary on the previous day had cost India six runs. His last innings with the bat was disappointing. Burdened with pressure and self-doubt, he searched online for motivation and found it in an image of Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing upwards with the word “Believe.” Siraj downloaded it, and all the way to the ground, he kept looking at that word again and again, reminding himself to believe.

Sometimes in life, we are like Siraj, burdened by mistakes and weighed down by expectations. Other times, we are like Woakes, battered, bruised, and not fully fit for the battle, yet still willing to stand. Both remind us of something powerful. It is not always about how strong we feel, but about what we believe, and who we lean on.

The Scriptures offer us a mirror to these moments of belief and bravery:

“I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Sometimes, we drop the catch. Sometimes, we can barely lift the bat. But always, we are invited to lift our eyes to believe and to step out with faith. Believe and take heart.

Prayer: God of life, and Giver of every good gift, we give you thanks and praise for this new day and all the blessings it holds.   Lord, when we face storms that shake us and stones that block our path, help us not to be discouraged. Instead, draw us into your presence, the source of true peace, quiet courage, and steady hope. Teach us to walk forward not with fear, but with faith. And Lord, as you strengthen us, make us a source of strength to others. We pray this in the name of the One who showed and taught us the way, the truth, and the love, Jesus our Lord. Amen.
