‘Be still’

It’s an odd time of year – I feel caught between endings and beginnings. School’s ended, ministers are leaving, clubs are in recess. Things seem to be in limbo before everything fires into action again in September. Time to stand back, review, take a breath.

‘Be still, and know that I am God.’  Psalm 46:10

I looked up Biblical characters who had a close connection with God. Enoch walked with God, Abraham left His home, Moses set His people free, Jacob wrestled, Elijah demonstrated His power, Paul preached. I’m sure they did take time to be still with God, but they are remembered for being men that acted on their faith with momentously historical results.

Then I remembered Mary, sister of Lazarus, known for sitting at Jesus ‘feet, making a choice at that moment to sit rather than serve, to listen rather than proclaim, to recharge rather than burn out.

Of course, there’s a time to serve and be busy with Kingdom work but in order to function at our best we need to be still and sit with God awhile. After all, He instigated the concept of Sabbath rest.

So, during this time of pause and limbo, come away to a quiet place with God where you can ‘Be still, and know that He is God.’
