Isaiah 40 v 31.
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint.
Astronaut Michael Collins described the problem of trying to link two orbiting space vehicles. When two airplanes’ rendezvous for an in-flight refuelling, the plane behind simply increases speed until it catches the other aircraft. In outer space, however, the situation is quite different. Acceleration puts the trailing spacecraft into a higher orbit, causing it to move away and widen the gap. Therefore, the ship’s commander must act against all natural instincts and slow down, dropping his craft into a lower orbit, which enables him to catch up, manoeuvre into position, and make contact at precisely the right moment.
So it is with the busy child of God. Taking on more activities can mean losing ground as a result of lost time with the Lord. To get ahead, we must slow down and wait on the Lord. As we do, we will have time to pray, to read God’s Word, and to rearrange our priorities.
I’m a bit like the airplane speeding up to catch up but I know that I should be more like the spacecraft needing to slow down. I find it quite difficult to say no and not do something which I’ve been asked to do or notice that something needs done.
Lockdown taught me the importance of having a time of rest. Let’s enjoy our quieter times and make use of our rest to listen to and learn more about our Saviour.
Those who wait for the will of God, rest in the work of God.
