Shiphrah and Puah.

On Tuesday the 6th July our reading was Exodus 2 v 1-10 and this passage encouraged me to read Exodus 1 v 15-21 as well.

I’m sure the names of these two women may be unfamiliar or forgotten by many. You may ask, “Who are they?”

They were midwives who saved the lives of many newborn boys, when Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, ordered that all boys be killed at birth. (Exodus 1 v 15-16)

They were amazing women who took a stand against injustice. They risked their own lives to save the baby boys.

I used to be a midwife and it was an honour to be present at the birth of hundreds of babies. The joy and happiness that each safe arrival brought was wonderful but unfortunately not all deliveries were happy. For some, these were times of great sadness and many tears.

Many of the parents in the days of Exodus must have been distraught too, when their babies were taken from them.

Let’s give thanks for people like Shiphrah and Puah who are willing to stand up today and help others.

God bless, Anna
