Time

I have been watching Jimmy McGovern’s gritty 3-part drama called Time, set in a prison. It was indeed harrowing to watch in many places but I didn’t want to miss any of it. I’m prone to having a wee doze in the evening if a programme is not very interesting. Sean Bean ‘s portrayal of the main character, Mark, was stunning and I think probably his best performance ever. I don’t want to spoil the plot for those who have not watched it yet but intend to.

Mark was sentenced to 4 years in prison for killing a cyclist when he was driving, after having consumed a lot of alcohol. He was a teacher. The drama focuses on his life in prison and how it changed him. The fear, the violence, the drugs, the intimidation and the companionship.  One of the most poignant moments to me was when one of the other prisoners came to Mark and asked him to write a message to his wife as it was the 25th wedding anniversary. He admitted to Mark that he was unable to read and write. Mark started to teach him these basic skills.

He was trying to live a good life in prison and trying to help others.

Paul was also imprisoned many times and he carried on his ministry. Many of his letters were written in prison. When Saul was a young man, he persecuted many but he was converted and became one of the most important Christian leaders.

We can all change for the better and no matter what our past God can transform our lives.

Heavenly father, we pray for all prisoners, that their lives may be transformed and that they go on to lead a good life. Amen.
